MEMBER ASKS HOW TO OBTAIN PREVIOUS

WEATHER DATA FROM WIWS

Hi WIWS:

I've been meaning to ask you - would it be possible for you to post a running total of rainfall from week to week? I see the daily measurements, but they get reset to zero I guess every day. This would be very useful for some of us non-resident gardeners - it would let us know when we either have to pester our resident friends to water for us, or just make a special trip to West Island to do it ourself.

DICK

Hello Dick:

Great question!

Rainfall totals are posted on a daily - weekly - monthly and yearly basis.

Simply click on the WIWS DATA LOG in the right column QUICK NAVIGATOR.The right column appears on all WIWS pages.

When you get to the Weather Station History you'll see tabs at the top for DAILY - WEEKLY - MONTHLY - YEARLY - CUSTOM

As an example - If you wanted the monthly rain total for June 2010 - simply ENTER THE MONTH AND YEAR ON THE TOP click on VIEW then MONTHLY .

You can scroll down the data for evevn more detailed breakdowns right to the day.

You can have a lot of fun with this great tool! Hope this answers your question.

Once you get familiar with this you can access any WeatherUnderground site for data around the world!

Acushnet’s long-time weather spotter Tom Carr reports another record breaking month. This May was the warmest and driest since 1993. Only 1.27" of rain fell mostly during the 3rd week of the month.

This March-April-May Spring Season was the warmest since Carr’s been keeping data in 1978.

West Island's live weather feed expands

By BETH PERDUE

bperdue@s-t.com

May 10, 2010 12:00 AM

For such a tiny island, one that makes barely a blip on the global scene, Fairhaven's West Island still manages to pack a punch in international personal weather communities.

The weather station on the 535-acre island, at the southern end of Sconticut Neck, has become a favorite of weather buffs worldwide, drawing international traffic from places like Moscow and Germany and earning a spot on many website favorites lists.

Now, the island's advanced weather station is expanding its reach and the information it can provide with the addition of a new camera at the island's southern end. The new station joins two existing sites from which real-time data is already being recorded.

Longtime weather spotter and founder of the weather station M.L. Baron said the new South Point Station is in the perfect location for recording weather conditions.

"I am very excited about this point. It is literally onshore, on one of the tallest houses on the island," he said. "We're right in the middle of Buzzards Bay."

The new site is the work of Jeff Vercellone, a marketing executive and weather enthusiast who joined West Island Weather Station as a member a few months ago. Vercellone then proposed siting an additional camera at his house at the southern end of Balsalm Street.

As part of the all-volunteer operation, the West Island resident purchased the necessary equipment himself, which Baron then installed and hooked up to WestIslandWeather.com.

Through the site, curious individuals can access West Island from anywhere on the globe, finding out current weather conditions through an online weather dashboard or seeing for themselves through live streaming video. The dashboard display includes conditions such as temperature, humidity, wind direction and speed, daily rainfall, and wind chill.

From the new station, live streaming video shows a close-up of the Town Beach, a shot looking southwest out toward Cuttyhunk, about 12 miles away, and one of Wilbur's Point/Angelica Island, a mile away, according to Baron.

A weather spotter for 35 years, Baron has recorded data from many big weather events in the area, including Hurricanes Bob and Gloria. His information-packed site includes videos and photos of significant weather events on the island and other daily happenings in a small coastal community.

But despite his own passion, Barron remains a bit perplexed by his worldwide guests.

"I am baffled by it," he said. "I wonder, what is your obsession or fascination with little West Island?"

Hello All:

April here in Acushnet was both very warm and very dry.

It was the warmest April on my records, some 5.4 degrees above normal.

An early beach day occurred on April 7th. when the temperatured soared

to 88 degrees. Low readings for the month never fell to the freezing mark.

Forsythia bloomed on April 1st. followed by the pear tree on the 19th. and

then the apple tree by the 21st.. The blooming thing was much to early and

not a good thing.

Only 0.29" of rain fell during the first 15 days of the month.

That was a good thing after a 15.61" monsoon of a month of March. The

second half of the month featured several periods of cold nuisance rains.

Evening t-storms on the 22nd. of the month where the first of the year and

featured a photogenic double rainbow.

A male hummingbird arrived on the afternoon of the last day of the month. No sign yet of the Baltimore Orioles who will miss by weeks apple blossom time.

Volcano’s impact would have been far different

if the US was down under.

By M.L.Baron WIWS

What if our continent was below the equator? The Iceland volcanofallout would have affected the US far greater than what the UK is experiencing today. Prevailing winds, the jet stream, storm systems and the like transit from east to west down under. The United States would have been paralyzed for weeks and even months, with the Northeast getting hit the hardest. Closed airports with ceased air traffic would have been the least of the problems. Crops, livestock, and the waterways would have been devastated . The mid-west and even the west coast would have been adversely affected as well.

click photo above for more information on climbing Mt St Helens

The Mt St Helen’s eruption in 1980 disrupted weather patterns in the US for over 2 years. In fact, Mt St Helens was the leading air pollution source in the State of Washington for a few months late in 2004, spewing up to 250 tons of acid- rain making sulphur dioxide a day, years after its cataclysmic eruption.

(ABOVE) This vile contains volcanic ash, a fine powder from Mt St Helens in 1980. Some of these fine microscopic particles where once huge boulders weighing several tons before being pulverized after the huge explosion during the volcanic eruption

In comparison, Mt St Helen’s 1980 eruption was little league compared to the big boys like Hawaii’s Kilauea and Pinatubo in the Philippines with discharges into the atmosphere in the thousands of tons per day during their last major eruptions.

The question arises: Could the plume from Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano eventually circumnavigate the earth and affect the US? This appears to be unlikely according to some nervous scientists as some volcanologists await another potentially more dangerous eruption from another volcano 6 miles away that could be 100 times more powerful. This could change the whole global environmental scenario significantly.

FYI-Hurricane Gloria in 1985 just refused to fizzle out. It circled the earth three times as a storm system, low pressure area, and a meager disturbance until finally fading away into history.

COMMENT ON THIS ARTICLE:

Interesting stuff. With all the talk over the past decade of an asteroid threat, I felt that the far bigger threat was from within, namely volcanic activity. The earth has had a tumultuous past and who’s to say that it could not happen again. It would not really take too much ash to severely alter the global climate and end all talk of global warming. Hey, this is all natural. How’d we get our oceans?

HISTORIC FLOODS REAFFIRM

FUTURE SEVERE WEATHER EVENTS

2010 Hurricane Season expected to be above average

by MLBaron KA1WBH

As New England continues to dry out and pick up the pieces negative predictions continue to come out on more severe weather expected down the pike. The waning El Nino cycle is mostly to blame. In a nut shell, developing tropical storms and hurricanes have a blank check along the Atlantic seaboard this season. With no predominant wind shear and other contributing factors, it won’t take much for a juvenile tropical system to get into a lot of mischief.

My gut instinct as a long-time weather spotter also tells me to expect an above average summer season with potent thunderstorms, hail and even some isolated tornado events right here in Southern New England. With all this in mind, you’ll might want to dust off your home owner’s insurance policy and read the fine print. You’ll discover that your deductible has quietly tripled or quadrupled of what it was just a few years ago.

Here’s the anticipated numbers for this years 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season:

(Keep in mind these are preliminary early figures and will get tweaked over the coming months. They could change for better or worse.)

According to the head hurricane honcho at Colorado State University, Dr Bill Gray, 11 - 16 named storms are expected, of which, 6 - 8 could become hurricanes with 3 - 5 being of major Category 3+ whoppers. A Category 3 hurricane packs winds of 111 to 130 MPH winds with surges over 12ft.

2010 Hurricane Names

2. Hurricane Bonnie

4. Hurricane Danielle

5. Hurricane Earl

7. Hurricane Gaston

8. Hurricane Hermine

9. Hurricane Igo

Senior Weather Spotters Dennis Bollea of Fairhaven and Tom Carr of Acushnet have been keeping weather records going back to the late ‘70's and both concur that March 2010 was on of the most historic and record breaking March months since they’ve been keeping records. Tom Carr reported an astounding 15.61" of rain which was 10.19" above normal. In contrast, Dennis Bollea reported 10.68" which was 6.04" above normal. (More on this scroll down)

With all this ground saturation, insects and reptiles are going to multiply in very high numbers not to mention an above average pollen count.

MARCH MONTH IN REVIEW

WITH TOM CAR, ACUSHNET,MA

WA1KDD

Hello All:

The wettest and warmest March on my records with snowfall

below normal. The incredible 15.61" of precipitation during the month is

some 10.19" above a normal March. 24.57" of precipitation has already

fallen this year. Three long duration events produced all but 1.07" of the

precipitation.

March 13-16th. saw 5.71" of rain - wind gusts to 38 mph.

March 22-24th. saw 2.65" of ran - wind gusts to 30 mph.

March 29-31st. saw 5.91" of rain - wind gusts to 30 mph.

The end result was historic flooding of local ponds and rivers and

homes and cellars and highways and backroads from Eastern Massachusetts

into Rhode Island and Connecticut. It was the wettest month of any month

on my 30 years of record.

The wet cloudy March prevented overnight temperatures from falling

to much and this helped to make this March the wamest on my records with

a mean temperature of 44.1 deg. which is 6.1 deg. above normal.

Croci opened on March 7th., grackles showed up on the 10th;

followed by honey bees on the 17th; peepers peeped on the 18th; and that

woke up the neighborhood woodchuck on the 19th. and then early daffodils

A series of storms the last week of the month brought the final

precip total just over the 4-inch mark. Late on the 25th the barometer

dropped to 28.72", the lowest pressure reading since November 22, 2005

(28.67")...One significant snowfall event occurred this month. On the

February 2010, the Month in review for Acushnet, MA

by Tom Carr WA1KDD

Hello All:

A bit warmer than normal February here in Acushnet with

above normal precipitation, but a little below normal for snowfall.

The month started on the breezy and cold side while the mid

Atlantic states got raked by a blizzard. Our weather pretty much behaved

itself until the 10th. of the month when a light snow turned ugly and wet

and wind plastered everything into the night and wee morning hours. Much

tree damage and power outages in the area from a 6" wet snowfall that

stayed around for several weeks.

February ended with two windswept rain events that dumped

4.01" of precip. that included just a touch of snow, but caused some

river flooding and dam concerns.

The February 25th. event dropped barometers off the wall to 28.70" before stalling around Long Island and causing wind damage north of Boston and more heavy snows inland and points south.
The Winter Season was near normal temperature-wise, but above
normal in precipitation and snowfall.

February 2010

As most of the Northeast got buried in historical amounts of snow, and leaving millions in the dark from hurricane force winds, SouthCoast for the most part was spared the brunt of this enormous weather disaster. With the exception of two storms on the 10th and 25th. the month was relatively quiet.

Here's some numbers from WIWS for February: High temp 50. Low temp 15. Average temp 37.5.

The low barometer reading (a measurement typical in a Category 1 hurricane!) was 28.68 on Feb 25. Highest wind gust 47.4MPH at 9PM on Feb 10. Precip 4.10".

There were 20 cloudy, overcast days out of 28.

 The Feb 10-‘10 Nor’Easter

elusive until the last minute

by MLBaron

A rain/snow line right over us last Wednesday had local meteorologists on edge. After much hype, the Nor’easter that was predicted to dump a hefty 1-foot snow fall here never came into fruition. Many weather watchers scoffed at the meager storm system as it struggled to deliver even an inch of wet snow the whole day. As the evening progressed, it was very clear that this gale wasn’t going away quietly. The ominous low pressure, which bottomed out at 29.98 at 6:27PM indicated the arrival of an intense storm system.

Most of the snow accumulation stayed to the west until the freezing temps kicked in after 5:30PM with snowfall totals ranging from 2 to 10 inches. Locally, West Island received 6.3", Fairhaven - 7", Acushnet - 6", S.Dartmouth - 4" in less than 5 hours.

This change-over (from rain to snow) type event proved to be fatal for hundreds of trees that succumbed to the weight of the heavy wet snow that pasted tree branches and strong winds. Many areas lost electricity. A few witnesses reported blue flashes in the night sky as power transformers blew out. Wind gusts recorded at WIWS peaked at 47.4 MPH at around 9PM and 51MPH at Hyannis.

Most local weather instruments froze in place by 10:30PM. It took 15 hours for the gear to thaw out at WIWS. For those who lost power, had trees come down or were stuck out in the elements that day, there’s no debate that the February 10-10 Nor’easter was indeed the most intense storm since the Dec. 19th Blizzard of ‘09.

High pressure kept us storm free

...but at a price

MLBaron/WIWS photo

What started off as a mild week during last Monday’s storm ended in a deep Arctic freeze. Record breaking low temperatures were delivered by high winds gusting up to 46.6 MPH out of the northwest Friday. By Saturday a low of 7.5 degrees was recorded at WIWS and the high never got above 21 degrees all day. Acushnet’s low was 5 above zero. The 15 to 20 below zero wind chills were brutal as wind gusts hardly let up all day Saturday.

The shoreline around West Island and other exposed areas were iced over within 36 hours. The salt water ice may seem solid however it is very unstable and dangerous to venture on. It also constantly changes character with the high and low tidal cycle.

An ocean storm may graze the immediate SouthCoast on Saturday but overall the weather patterns look quiet for the time being. This pattern is expected to continue but with modified temperatures reaching into the 30's.

(ABOVE) A recent cold snap iced over this West Island shoreline within 36 hours. WIWS photo

Today mark’s the half-way point of Winter. The days are getting longer. Spring is now 45 days away, which begins March 20th at 1:32PM EDT. Today’s sunshine is equivalent to daylight during the first week of November.

And yet another countdown reminder, we “spring-ahead” 1 hour Sunday, March 14.

A few have asked what does “POP” mean in the forecast. POP stands for “probability of precipitation”.

THE MONTH IN REVIEW ACUSHNET

BY TOM CARR WA1KDD

Hello All:

A somewhat colder, drier and less snowier than normal

January here in Acushnet

. The snow came in the first few days of the

month and stayed late. Some 6.7" slowly sublimated away till the rains of January 17-18th finished the job. I was good to see it go after the snows of December. Nothing over 42 degrees at this location until the 25th. when a warm 40mph windswept rainy afternoon fell some pine branches and gave

the heating system a rest.

The warmth did not last long as an Artic front held day time

temps to only 21 on Jan. 29th. with winds gusting to 42 mph and more games of pick up sticks.

It was only 5 degrees over bare ground the next morning.

January 25th Gale

brought in warmth from the South

PUBLISHED JANUARY 26, 2010

BY MLBARON

A mild spring like storm brought in temperatures above 55 degrees, on Monday, that’s 20 degrees above normal. Potent southeasterly gales pumped in the juicy tropical air from down south.

Rainfall measurements varied from .92" at WIWS to over 2" inland. The Barometer bottomed out at 29.24 at 6:34PM. The high winds were persistent most of the afternoon with several gusts over 50MPH. The peak wind gust at WIWS was 55.2MPH at 5PM.

There were a few bands of heavy tropical downpours especially when a last wave of energy transited the area around 7PM. More than half of West Island lost power including a few other isolated pockets elsewhere. Fairhaven had several reports of trees down including a few that completely blocked roadways.

(Above: A vessels bow always points towards the wind direction, especially when the winds exceed 50MPH. This West Island lobster boat rides out a mild January 25th gale)

The causeway fared well at the high tide cycle around 3PM and remained passable throughout the storm event. The New Bedford-Fairhaven Hurricane barrier closed to marine traffic during the height of the gale.

More seasonal temperatures consistent with mid-winter arrives shortly with all eyes focusing on a possible snow event this weekend. The bottom line is, it’s going to get cold again, but cheer up, the spring countdown is now only 52 days away! (as of Jan 26, 2010)

The Wild Winter

Weather Continues into 2010!

JANUARY 3, 2010

by M.L.BARON KA1WBH WEST ISLAND WEATHER STATION

A powerful weekend storm system brought the Northeast to it’s knees once again with Maine taking the brunt of it. Like a young kid lost in a shopping mall, this storm had a confusing direction of travel actually retro-grading or coming in backwards. This rare but not unheard of maneuver threw area forecasters into making some chancy and challenging tough calls.

If this was a classic Nor’Easter with the more familiar weather patterns it’s predictability would have been much easier. High wind gusts at West Island reached 39MPH making the wind chill go down to 5 below zero at times. The barometer bottomed out at 29.09 Sunday @12:37PM. This very low reading, equivalent to pressures from a minimal hurricane, reinforced just how powerful this storm was. The final local snow totals varied from 3.5" at the island to 5" inland in Fairhaven and New Bedford.

Above normal high tide cycles from a full moon were already a threat even before the storm arrived. There were reports of some flooding making some roads briefly impassable in Plymouth and points north along the MA coast.

This storm had much potential and energy to pack more of a punch than was actually delivered. It certainly commanded the respect it deserved by meteorologists in the Northeast.

For those who like snow, this might be your year. Almost 50% of The US has some kind of snow cover. There are indications that current weather patterns support multiple Nor’easters over the next few weeks.

DECEMBER and 2009 IN REVIEW

FROM TOM CARR WA1KDD - ACUSHNET, MA

Hello All:

A colder than normal December with much above normal

precipitation and snowfall at this station in Acushnet. The big weather

event for the month was a 16" snowstorm which started late on the 19th.with most of the snow falling on December 20th.. It was the biggest single day December snowstorm in decades. In 1981 some 14" of heavy wet snow fell on Dec 5th-6th.. A 3 day snow event on Dec 5th. 6th. & 7th. dropped 19.3" at this location.

The year 2009 was just slightly above normal temperature

wise, but above average in precipitation and snowfall. It was the 3rd.

wettest year in 30 years of records with 64.74" of precip. recorded.

2005 saw 68.34" of precip. and 1983 had 66.73" at this location.

The Summer Season months of June and especially

July were very wet and a huge disappointment to farmers and beach

goers. August started off better but ended with a feeder band from

offshore Hurricane Bill dropping 2.94" of rain followed by the remnants of T.S. Danny with 4.36" of rain.

Our December snowstorm produced a White Christmas

at this location. The first since the year 2000.

MORE SNOW TOTALS

The Blizzard of 2009 Didn’t “Measure-Up”

By M.L.Baron of The West Island Weather Station KA1WBH

(A Tropical Coconut Tree decorated with Christmas Ornaments pops out of the snow at a cottage on West Island. (relax..the tree is fake, but really cool!)

The debate continues as to exactly how much snow fell on the December 19-20 borderline blizzard along SouthCoast. Here at The West Island Weather Station on Bluepoint Rd I measured 15.5" after carefully taking three measurements about 3 yards apart and divided by three for the average. A neighbor nearby said he had 18” in his yard.

(This snowman was the SkyCam night time image viewed live during The Blizzard of 2009. It was seen all over the world on the WIWS web site. Countries such as Great Britain, Israel, Saudi Arabia and Iran were some of the many visitors who wanted to see the action here during the Northeast blizzard.)

Although the Blizzard of 2009 broke many all-time snowfall records for December since records have been kept starting in 1905, the other big story is the snow itself. The very dry light texture which is more typical with lake effect snow in Buffalo caused the snow to accumulate quickly. This type of snow is also very difficult to measure because it’s depth is influenced by the wind back drafts from buildings and overall topography of the surface. It is estimated that if the snow was more in character with classic New England blizzards, the heavier wet snow probably would not have exceeded a foot region-wide.

(WHAT WAS THE EXACT TIME IT BEGAN TO SNOW AT WIWS? check this out: WIWS 24hrSkyCam time-lapse cycle for December 19, 2009)

(WIWS SKYCAM TIME LAPSE VIDEO DEC 20, 2009 24HR CYCLE)

The snow began to fall Saturday night December 19 around 10PM. Winds at WIWS peaked at 51.7MPH out of the northeast at 220AM and the barometer bottomed-out to 29.30 inches at 327AM Sunday morning. The wind was clocked several times over 35MPH sustained with heavy snow and temperatures in the mid-twenties, thus meeting the criteria for declaring this storm a blizzard event. “High snow amounts do not necessarily have to be the primary feature of a blizzard, but it’s the violence in the way it comes down with sustaining high winds and biting temperatures.” stated M.L.Baron. Snow-melt averaged about 1.30" of precipitation. The snow eventually tapered off in the early afternoon with a slight hint of an orange streak on the horizon at dusk marking the end of this history making storm.

(The temperature was 18 degrees with a chill of 6 above zero at times when this photo was taken Monday morning at 7AM. In contrast, just 4 short months ago, this frozen shoreline on the north side of the causeway was full of beach goers enjoying the warm August sunshine and 70 degree water.) see below:

This 2003 December weather event was consistent with a typical 3-day Nor’Easter. The ‘09 Blizzard had a silver lining as it transited the area quickly. If it would have lingered we very likely would have been measuring the final snow totals by several feet.

The big question is, Is this recent storm pattern a precursor to a busy winter season? “With caution I have to say no, but this is New England and the “rules” are made up as we go along.” stated M.L.Baron. With mild temperatures in the low 50's along with some rain showers, a significant amount of snow has been washed away a week after the blizzard. Colder more seasonal temperatures are expected by mid-week. Another winter storm event is possible New Year's Day.

NOVEMBER IN REVIEW

FROM TOM CARR WA1KDD - ACUSHNET, MA

 Hello All:

A much warmer than normal November here in Acushnet,

with below normal precipitation. It was the 2nd. warmest November on

my records, with a mean temperature of 49.0 degrees and the month

was 5 degrees above normal. Nov. of 2006 had a mean of 49.1 degrees.

Both the high and low temps for the month came early. A killing

frost of 27 degrees occurred on Nov. 7th.. High pressure dominated most

of the month bringing more sunshine than usual for November.

The remnants of Hurricane Ida turned itself into a pressure gradient

Nor' easter and it sat off the mid-Atlantic coast for several days near the

middle of the month causing beach erosion and flooding rains there. Only

0.86" of rain fell at this station during that event.

The bulk of our rain fell during the last 7 days when November

became more typical stuck in a rut gloomy. It took the backside of a

deepening coastal low near months end to crank up the Westerly winds

and clear things out. It was the driest Nov. since only 0.74" fell in 2001.

The Fall Season was somewhat warmer than normal with near

normal precipitation.
